A couple of songs I would like to point out to y'all is Nas "I Gave You Power", "Rewind", "Who Killed It?" and Lupe Fiasco "All Black Everything"
In the song "I Gave You Power" Nas is rapping from a point of view of a gun. Pretty much he is the gun and he is rapping about the day in the life of a legel handgun owned by must likely a young drug dealer. He made the gun have a mind and a conscience.
"Always I'm in some shit, my abdomen is the clip, the barrel is my dick, uncircumcised pull my skin back and cock me, I bust off when they unlock me..."
Another Nas track that is very creative is the song "Rewind". In this song Nas is rapping a story like any other rap song but whats so special about this song is that he is telling the story BACKWARDS.
And the last Nas track that I found real creative is the song "Who Killed It?". The song is basically about Nas who is playing a investigator trying to find out who exactly killed hip-hop. He takes us on a journey throughout the whole song and its just real cool when you really sit there and listen to it.

Now "All Black Everything" by Lupe Fiasco is very very VERY creative. He takes us on a dream he had where world was different with different historical events being done a different way. For example he says "First 400 years, see we actually enjoyed it. Constitution written by W.E.B. Du Bois". Pretty much he's saying picture the United States today if slavery never happened and instead of rich white men like Thomas Jefferson and Samuel Adams helping write the Constitution a black man, ideally W.E.B. Du Bois helps writes it. Another good verse i enjoyed was "Extra extra on the news stands, black woman voted head of Ku Klux Klan. Malcolm Little dies as a old man, Martin Luther King reads the eulogy for him. Followed by Bill O'Reilly who read from the Quran. President Bush sends condolences from Iran, Where FOX News reports live that Ahmadinejad wins Mandela peace prize." That whole verse is just awesome to me. The 2nd verse is also as great as the 1st verse so I recommend you just listen to the whole song a couple of times just to make sure you hear all about this awesome dream Lupe had.
I really like both Lupe Fiasco and Nas! Their rhymes definitely have depth. I used to like the song "The Message" by Nas back in the day, mostly because it reminded me of one of my best friends. But I always remember the line "but a thug changes, and love changes, and best friends become strangers..." Rap could be such a powerful tool for social transformation because things are easier to remember when they rhyme! It could be a really great way to get messages into people's heads but as we were discussing on a different blog, a lot of really great hip hop doesn't get airtime on the radio. You have to search for it.
